JAB MOLASSIE

Jab Molassie is a re-working of Igor Stravinsky's 'L'Histoire du Soldat.' The original is a Faustian tale of a soldier deserting the First World War, who happens upon the devil and winds up selling his soul, represented by the violin, in exchange for untold wealth.  This tale is re-written and made into a turf war set it in Trinidad.  The narrator becomes the Midnight Robber and the devil is Jab Molassie, both traditional Carnival characters in Trinidad and Tobago culture. The soldier is 'Starboy,' a young musician from the hills of Laventille, which overlooks the capital city of Port of Spain.

The world premiere was on November 2014 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
